READ: Isaiah 57:14-15
And it shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people's way.” For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
Imagine being Isaiah, living amongst a people who in their pride have chosen over and over again other gods for comfort and salvation. How easy it is to be just like Israel and have these same idols in our lives that can do nothing for our souls. Isaiah speaks to his people much like Jesus did in the Sermon on the Mount when he said God will revive the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite.
Their hearts were far from this, far from Him. This is how God moves amongst His creation: He in his mercy comes to those who view themselves as lowly, who have humble hearts and contrite spirits and understand their great need of salvation that is outside of themselves. Let today be a day when we see our sin and brokenness.
PRAY: God, would you please grant us the mercy in this lenten season to see ourselves as poor and needy. Help us to see how rich You are and how in Your love, You poured out Yourself through Jesus’ sacrifice, in order to make us rich.
