Ready to GO: Preparing Your Heart (and Passport) for the Mission Field

When Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15), He wasn’t giving a suggestion. He was giving his followers a command, one that has been extended to us. The question is: are you ready to go?

Too often, opportunities to serve come suddenly. A team is forming, a door opens, a trip is announced, and we realize we’re not quite ready. But readiness isn’t just about having the time or resources. It’s about preparing both practically and spiritually to say “yes” when God calls.

1. Prepare Your Life
Before you can pack your bags, there are a few tangible steps to make sure you’re prepared:
  • Check your passport. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. If it’s expired—or even close—renew it now!
  • Stay flexible. Keep your schedule and finances open for when opportunities arise. Even small acts of generosity or short-term trips can make a big impact.
  • Pray over your readiness. Ask God to make you sensitive to His timing and guidance. Readiness starts long before the plane ticket is booked.
2. Prepare Your Heart
Readiness isn’t just about paperwork—it’s about posture. A willing heart is what God uses most powerfully.
  • Say “yes” before you know the details. Faith often looks like stepping into the unknown, trusting that God will fill in the blanks.
  • Engage locally. You don’t have to cross an ocean to practice mission living. Serve your community, volunteer, and share Christ where you are—it’s great training ground for going global.
  • Stay connected. Missionally-minded community keeps your heart aligned and encouraged.
3. Remember: The Invitation Is Always Open

God’s call to “go” isn’t limited to a certain age, stage, or season. He’s continually inviting His people to partner with Him in His redemptive work. Sometimes that means boarding a plane. Other times it means walking across the street. What matters most is a readiness of spirit—a heart that says, “Here am I, send me” (Isaiah 6:8).

So, whether you’re dreaming of serving overseas or wondering if now is your time, start preparing today. Update that passport. Pray bold prayers. Keep your “yes” ready.
