Life Group Study - May 18, 2025

Read: Luke 9:37–45
Context: Jesus and the inner three come down from a spiritual high (the Transfiguration) into a spiritual battle. The other disciples are overwhelmed by a problem they can’t fix—a possessed boy they can’t heal. Jesus steps in with compassion and authority.
Say: The disciples had done this before—they had cast out demons. But this time, it didn’t work. Pressure revealed a disconnect between past success and present dependence.
Ask: What strikes you about the chaos in this story? Why do you think the disciples couldn’t cast the demon out this time? How do you personally wrestle with relying on your experience   rather than God’s power? Where in your life right now are you feeling the pressure?

Read: Mark 9:28–29 & Matthew 17:19–20
Context: Later, the disciples ask Jesus, “Why couldn’t we do it?” Jesus says it’s because of their little faith—and adds, “This kind only comes out by prayer.”
Say: Jesus wasn’t rebuking their effort—He was revealing their lack of spiritual depth. The disciples had faith, but it was disconnected from true dependence. Prayer wasn’t their foundation––it had become an afterthought.
Ask: What does Jesus’ response teach us about faith under pressure? Why is prayer so essential to handling spiritual pressure well? How would you describe your prayer rhythm right now—routine, reactive, or rooted? Where do you need to grow in dependence this week?

Read: 2 Corinthians 12:9–10 & John 15:5
Context: Paul reminds us that power is perfected in weakness and that, apart from Jesus, we can do nothing.
Say: The pressure we feel might not mean failure—it might be the place where God is deepening our faith and pruning our self-reliance.
Ask: What part of your life feels like a “pressure point” right now? How has God used pressure in the past to strengthen your faith or reveal misplaced trust? What would it look like for you to walk in deeper dependence on Jesus this week?

 Reflective Passages: Psalm 55:22, Isaiah 40:29-31, Ephesians 6:10-12, 1 Romans 5:3-5, 1 Peter 5:7
