Why We Do VBS (And Why It’s So Much More Than Just Fun and Games)

At first glance, Vacation Bible School at Legacy Church might look like a week of chaos: matching shirts, wild dance moves, bandanas everywhere, and snack crumbs trailing down the hall. But underneath the laughter, glitter, and noise is something steady. Something sacred.
What’s actually happening during VBS? Discipleship. Real, powerful, life-shaping discipleship.
Each summer, VBS becomes one of the clearest pictures of what it means to be the body of Christ. Because during this one incredible week, everyone shows up: teenagers, retired teachers, young parents, empty nesters, college students home for the summer. People who usually serve behind the scenes step into classrooms. People who don’t usually teach lead prayer. People who only see each other in passing on Sundays become partners in the gospel.
And our kids? They see it all.

They see the same Mr. Mark who hands out high fives on Sunday mornings is now telling Bible stories with energy and heart. They see Ms. Dixie kneeling on the floor beside them during craft time, reminding them that God made them on purpose. They see teenagers they look up to—kids just a little older than they are—leading games, praying out loud, dancing, and serving.
And they start to realize: this is what it looks like to follow Jesus.
It’s not just one week. It’s not just the songs (though we love those). It’s not even just the crafts, or snacks, or funny skits. VBS is about kids learning that the church isn’t a building—it’s a body. One body, many parts, all working together to help them know and follow Jesus.
VBS meets kids exactly where they are in their faith journey. Some of them walk through our doors for the first time, unsure of what they believe, not even sure who Jesus is. Some have been here since preschool and are beginning to ask deeper questions.

No matter where they start, each child is seen, loved, and told the truth: Jesus knows them. Loves them. Wants a relationship with them.
That’s the point. That’s why we do what we do.
Yes, it’s fun. Yes, it’s loud. But when a child walks away from a week at Legacy VBS knowing that God made them, Jesus loves them, and they’re part of something bigger than themselves? That’s worth every song, every snack, every ounce of glitter in the carpet.
