1) We Have Tasted What Is Coming
Read: Psalm 23:4-5, 2 Samuel 9:1-13
Context: David writes with enemies still present…not after the trouble has been removed. And yet, right there in the middle of it, God prepares a table. David hasn’t received total relief…yet, he receives a real taste of God’s provision, protection, and presence. And Mephibosheth had done nothing to earn his place at the table was given to him bc of the covenant faithfulness and kindness of the king.
Say: When Jesus was at Martha’s house, the Last Supper, Matthew’s table, and the beach with Peter, something broken began to be made right. Every table with Jesus is a sign of what the world looks like when Jesus reigns.
Ask (go slow): What is a taste of God’s goodness that you come back to in order to keep your eyes on what is to come? What parallels can we see between the tables Jesus set in the New Testament and the one that is set in the eternal kingdom?
Reflection Thought: Jesus has come – but Jesus is coming again. Every one of these tables was on this side of brokenness, but they each pointed toward a table on the other side.
2) We Know Where The Story Is Going
Read: Revelation 19:6-9, 2 Corinthians 5:7
Say: A day is coming when the world will finally look like it belongs to the King it has belonged to all along. And that matters, because faith is not pretending the world looks better than it does. Faith is learning to live by the truer reality when the visible one appears to contradict it.
Ask: Have you ever felt as though the world around you contradicted God’s word? How did you wrestle with your faith in that time and remind yourself of the truth? What is significant about the wedding imagery when describing the kingdom of God in Revelation?
Reflection Thought: You can build your life on this. You may not know what tomorrow holds or understand fully what God is doing right now…but you know where the story is going. And the table is waiting.
3) We Live Toward What Is Coming
Read: Hebrews 11:1-16
Context: The people of faith listed in Hebrews 11 saw enough to keep going. They didn’t have everything in hand yet, but they’d seen enough from a distance to know it was real…enough to keep moving forward.
Say: Faith isn’t only looking forward. Sometimes faith is refusing to go backward because you know what God has prepared is better. What you believe God has promised changes what you need from Him right now.
Ask: Is there one person from Hebrews 11 whose story of faith particularly resonates with you? What are practical ways you can encourage yourself or others to choose faith in what God has promised over going back to something familiar?
Reflection Thought: That’s faith. Future certainty produces present faithfulness.
