Everyone, Everywhere, All the Time: How Sara Sees the World

When it comes to living missionally, many people think of organized service days or overseas trips. But for Sara Carrera, every moment is an opportunity to live on mission at work, at home, and everywhere in between.

Sara’s love for Jesus and compassion for people shape the way she sees the world. Whether she’s working at the tattoo shop she owns with her husband, volunteering at a free urgent care clinic, or walking her dog in the park, Sara keeps her eyes open for those who might never step inside a church.

“People will often break down and start telling you their stories, and I get to pray with them,” she said. “Meeting people in these vulnerable spaces with the love of Christ shows the world who Jesus really is.”

A Glimpse into Sara’s Story

Sara grew up in church and knew about God, but she admits there was a long season when her focus shifted to worldly success and money.

“As I think about my own story and experiences, I can see His gentleness and kindness in bringing me back to Him,” Sara said. “My spiritual gifts of empathy and compassion for the broken were used by the enemy to get me into bad situations in my past. I was surrounded by the wrong people and making the wrong choices. Now, I’m learning how to use my gifts as He intended. I love being part of a prison ministry and speaking to people with a gospel perspective, trusting God to save, not me.”

Everyone, Everywhere, All the Time

Sara looks for ways to make people feel seen—everyone, everywhere, all the time. Instead of turning away from someone asking for help, she offers a cup of coffee and a listening ear. She’s never had anyone refuse prayer.

One of her dearest friendships began when she met a woman experiencing homelessness who was reading a Bible. “I just asked, ‘So where are you at?’” Sara said. “That simple question turned into a two-hour conversation and an ongoing relationship.”

At home, Sara models this same heart for her kids. “I don’t just want to tell them how to love others. I want to show them how to love the broken, the underdog, the outcast,” she said. “Whoever society pushes aside is exactly who I’m going to, because that’s who Jesus was drawn to. I’m reading right now that we will be known by our fruit. But what is our fruit?”

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”   — John 13:35

Battling Feelings of Inadequacy

Not everyone finds it easy to talk to strangers or step into uncomfortable moments. Sara understands that, but she challenges us to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

“It’s easy to stay on the sidelines and say, ‘That’s not my gifting,’” she said. “But Jesus calls us to be His hands and feet. He can use anyone with a willing spirit who simply shows up.”

For those who feel unqualified, she reminds us that the Holy Spirit equips us:  “…being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might…”   — Colossians 1:11

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the honor of being used by God,” Sara said. “Who am I to be chosen by Him? I’ve done so many wrong things, but in His kindness, He forgives me, loves me, and uses me. When I can stop to pray for someone or fill up a gas tank, I’m in awe of His grace and His ability to use the lowly and the broken.”

Even rejection doesn’t discourage her. “If someone doesn’t accept what I say or do, I’ll take that embarrassment for Him,” she said. “Maybe I planted a seed. Some of us plant, some of us water. I pray before I leave my house every day, asking God to open my eyes to the needs around me and equip me to meet them.”

“The Christian walk is the least boring thing we can do,” she added. “We get to wake up every day asking, ‘God, what do You want me to do today?’ There’s so much work to be done, and there’s an opportunity every single day.”
