Blessed are those who Hunger for God

In this powerful continuation of the Beatitudes series, the message centers on Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” This verse serves as a compelling invitation to live with spiritual urgency and dependence on God—not just once a week, but every day.

Using vivid imagery and practical storytelling—including the chaos of family mealtimes, the fleeting satisfaction of fast food, and the spiritual starvation that results from neglecting God's Word—the message illustrates how our spiritual hunger and thirst mirror physical needs. Just as our bodies require food and water to function, our souls require righteousness—right standing and right living with God—to flourish.

The sermon explores two foundational truths:

Hungering for righteousness requires action. Like preparing a meal, seeking God takes effort and intention. We can’t drift into spiritual health.

The hunger never fully disappears—but God promises to fill. While our need for Him remains daily, God is faithful to meet us again and again with sustaining grace.

The message turns next to Micah 6:6–8, where God's vision of righteousness is defined as:

Act justly – Living in alignment with God's character and justice in a broken, unjust world.

Love mercy – Receiving and extending the unearned kindness and compassion of God.

Walk humbly with your God – Following Jesus’ example of surrender, trust, and obedience.

Drawing connections to Job 37:23, Psalm 33:5, Psalm 89:14, and Amos 5:24, we’re reminded that justice and righteousness are the foundation of God's rule. The message powerfully weaves in Philippians 2, reflecting on Christ’s ultimate humility—how He laid aside glory and stepped into our brokenness.

The conclusion lands on a quote from C.S. Lewis:

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

That deeper desire—for justice, mercy, peace, and fulfillment—points us back to Jesus. Only in Him do we find a righteousness that satisfies our deepest hunger. This sermon is a call not just to believe in righteousness, but to chase after it with urgency, hope, and joy—because in Christ, the promise is true: you will be filled.
